2009 program wrap ups

Last week, I was at an awards dinner and someone said in their speech:

"If you strive for perfection, you will achieve greatness"

While I doubt this is an original quote, it has resonated with me and I think it applies to the three B4C programs that were held in April.  Each had its unique challenges, but the students rose to meet them, and often surpassed our expectations.

bryn mawr Bryn Mawr: The first program at Bryn Mawr was a great success.  We saw 28 people cut their hair, while 20 shaved their heads.  While this may not sound like a lot compared to our other programs, there are only 1300 students at the school, so percentage-wise this is a huge triumph for them.  The thing that really struck me about the event was the sense of community.  Everyone supported each other in a way that we have not seen at other programs.
drexel Drexel: The University required a rain call at 3 pm the day before the event, at which point the students made a decision based on the weather report at the time and made the call to move it inside.  Although the weather cleared up the next day, moving the event inside had its advantages and we made the most of it, including getting a band last minute.  The event had a speaker from their (and Bryn Mawr's) beneficiary charity, CHOP - a first for a B4C event.  At the end of the day 76 people shaved their heads and 14 people cut their hair.
gwu GWU:The remarkable thing about the GW event this year was how they partnered with other organizations and were able to obtain several thousand dollars in corporate sponsorship, including a matching gift for each head shaved from NIH Federal Credit Union.  If this can spread to our other programs it could be a great new revenue stream for our programs.  At this event we had 23 people cut and 69 shave.

While we are still tabulating and collecting donations, we estimate that we will have raised $20-25,000 this year.  The final number will be released in June.  Remember that you can still sponsor a participant or a program through May 15.

Congratulations to all of our programs and the students who put so much effort into them!
